Known for her tough questioning, White House correspondent Helen Thomas fired questions at 10 U.S. presidents over the course of her career covering Washington politics. Margaret Warner talks to The Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty about Thomas’ legacy as a journalistic trailblazer and White House institution.

Gwen was our heart and soul here at the PBS NewsHour for nearly two decades. She shared co-anchor and managing editor duties on our show with @judywoodruffpbs and was the moderator of @washingtonweekpbs. She covered eight presidential campaigns, moderated two vice presidential debates, and was a mentor and inspiration to countless journalists. She was a beloved sister, aunt, godmother and friend to many. Gwen died in November 2016 after an almost yearlong battle with cancer.

After a 35-day partial shutdown of the federal government, President Trump announced Friday that a deal has been reached to reopen the government and fund it for three weeks while negotiations on border security take place. “I have seen and heard from enough Democrats and Republicans that they are willing to put partisanship aside, I think, and put the security of the American people first,” he said at the White House.
