Luce’s book, “Time to Start Thinking: America in the Age of Descent,” examines the U.S. role in global competitiveness. He writes, ”unless America can address government’s role in a more pragmatic light, it may doom itself to continued descent.”

On Wednesday’s NewsHour, Jeffrey Brown sits down with jazz great Wynton Marsalis. The musician, educator and author was leading the 16th annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival in New York.

Part-competition, part-celebration, part-workshop, 110 high school bands from around the country entered this year’s competition, submitting recorded performances for the judges. Just 15 were chosen.
